In films, a “soundscape” creates a sense of “being there” for the viewer. The director and sound designer carefully select and mix sounds that will create the aural landscape of a place and space. A soundscape might include footsteps, doors slamming, outside traffic, the sound of children playing – whatever sounds that particular scene would include. In a movie like Star Wars, the soundscape includes sounds we never dreamed of before watching the movie!
We met Ben Burtt, one of the great American sound designers, in the documentary above. This documentary is from quite a few years ago, but it still speaks volumes about “soundscapes”, and how carefully created sounds can be the making of a great film!
